Skin conditions are some of the most common ailments of both dogs and cats. The veterinarians at Eastgate Animal Clinic in Memphis are experienced in diagnosing and treating a variety of pet dermatological issues and have had great success with treating dogs and cats with skin diseases but we are not specialists or board-certified dermatologists. If your pet has a more advanced or difficult problem, we may feel that your pet may benefit from the care of a board certified Vet dermatologist and we may refer you to one of the specialists in our area. Please note: if your pet needs allergy testing, we will refer you to a board certified dermatologist for the allergy testing.
When we test for pet allergies, we use various methods including blood allergy analysis and food trials. It is important to identify the underlying cause of your pet’s medical condition to develop an effective treatment. Pet skin and allergy conditions are often difficult to diagnosis without the assistance of pet allergy testing. We offer several types of allergy tests performed by our veterinary team to ensure your pet receives the proper diagnosis and treatment.
One option is to perform an allergy test by using a blood sample from your pet. The blood is tested for a wide variety of allergen antibodies to identify the specific cause of your pet’s allergic reaction. Once we know what your pet is allergic to, we can then manage and treat the conditions and thus relieve the symptoms.
Food allergy testing is performed by conducting specialized hypoallergenic diet trials on dogs and cats. Various proteins and carbohydrates are isolated to find the proper combination that works best for your pet.
After the source of the allergen is identified, we can design an effective treatment specific to your pet. One option is to desensitize your pet to the allergen by using allergy shots or drops. In the event of a food allergy, we can find alternative pet food and treats.
Please contact us to schedule an appointment or to discuss any concerns you may have regarding your pet’s allergies.
